Great Snails of Fire by TanyaSimoneSimpson Great Snails of Fire by TanyaSimoneSimpson
We have a family of little orange ramshorn snails that live in one of our aquariums, hanging out with the goldfish and helping to keep stuff clean. Today, they're congregating on the LED strip at the top of the tank and it looks like they're lit up from within, so I had to take a photo one of them being all glowy and cute. I didn't use any light apart from the LED strip itself, so little snail looks very strange.

...perhaps in the light growing algae?

There was a constant battle with algae in that fishtank. At least the snails always had a lot to eat :)

That is really quite interesting! I think you can see the tank's effect quite well in the background, but it provides a great backdrop for the snail itself.

I wonder why they are congregating there, whether it's the heat, light or something else.

Fascinating stuff!

I have no idea. It's really weird. I don't think the LEDs produce much heat, if any. Maybe they do but it's not enough for humans to feel or notice. It's definitely one of their favourite places :)

I feel it may cause some damage if the LEDs produced a lot of heat, but who knows. That's pretty intriguing, though...does every snail have one LED light to themselves? :paranoid:

The axolotl (in a different tank, cause he eats snails) likes LED surfing too, even though he's an albino with no eyelids. I want to know what the appeal is!

So subtle and luminous. I love the intense colors and lighting. Well shot.

Thank you :aww: The colour of the LED strip that the snails were sitting on can be changed with a remote control so I'm patiently waiting for them to sit there again so I can try different colours in photos.

The little snails are adorable. They munch on algae and goldfish waste but we sometimes give them bit of carrot as a treat. I want to try and shoot some macro photos of them but it all depends on them settling somewhere close to the edge of the aquarium so I can get my macro lens close enough to them to focus properly :aww:

I've never seen them hanging out on the LED strip before and it looked so pretty to see them glowing. They're pretty cool the rest of the time too, with their lovely bright orange shells :aww:
