La bête rouge (the red beast)

It's me, covered in food dye (for red skin and yellow teeth), chomping on nice chewy flesh (or kitchen roll soaked in more food dye) and being evil.

The weirdly shaped catchlight in my eye is from the flash being reflected off a tiled wall. It wasn't intentional, but I rather like it. If you want details of how to do it, I've submitted a quick tutorial HERE.

I'd have to make the fake blood with a base of golden syrup cause there's something delicious about the combination of syrup and bacon

I'd never even heard of scrapple before I read your comment. I just Wiki'd it and while it initially sounds rather horrible I'm sure it's one of those foods that looks gross and isn't good for you but tastes awesome. Anything involving pork and frying generally works for me. I just got back from a shoot and I'm starving...totally craving pork now

Amazingly, it didn't stain. Asda's own brand food dye is the only stuff I've ever used that doesn't stain, so I'm pimping it like mad!

I love taking photos like this where I intentionally try to NOT look pretty. It's very liberating, looking as freaky and unlike myself as possible, and it's very cool to know that people who know me wouldn't have recognised me from the picture :)

When I grow up I'm going to be Hell Girl :D

I painted my face with food dye, wiped on in layers using kitchen roll. It didn't take that long to do, and surprisingly it came off really easily. I've had lots of unpleasant experiences in the past involving having to go to the shops with my hands and arms dyed red from fake blood I'd been using in photos. People NEVER ask about it, but they always look nervous...hehe!

I love this photo. Especially the color. I love how the color of your skin makes your gums look really odd, and the color of your teeth is so dull.

For the record, I thought it was bacon, haha. Interesting that it's a kitchen roll, you got some interesting texture out of it!

I knew I would need to put the food dye in my mouth to colour my gums and teeth, but it tasted so horrible I nearly threw up. I don't know how people eat food with that stuff in it!

:iconimmortalslayer:
ImmortalSlayer Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2009
Ugh, that sucks. I guess it's better in food because the food masks the taste? I doubt they use a whole lot of it in food either, unless you're trying to get a really deep color you don't need more than a few drops.

The only jerky we've got in the house is for the cats and it smells so bad it would be right at the bottom of the list of things I could put in my mouth for photos. Cats have such a great sense of smell compared to people, yet they eat such icky stuff.

It came off really easily, which surprised me. While I was coating myself in it I was slightly worried that I would be red for a week afterwards, but I got in the shower as soon as I finished shooting and it washed off instantly with shower gel.

It's Asda's own brand food colouring and it's the most blood-like food dye I've ever seen. It's almost opaque and has a great consistency. I don't even need to add other colours to it to get the right shade of red. Definitely a good buy!

I love the catchlight too. One of the other shots from the series had an even better one and I'm thinking of writing a quick tutorial explaining how to get that shape of catchlight.
