I'm running this past friends on a couple of different social media platforms I use. It's an idea I've just had, like 5 minutes ago, but I have a good feeling about it so I'd like some fuel for developing it.

Before I get into it, I need to explain Patreon for people who haven't heard of it. It's basically on-going crowdfunding, so people can pledge an amount (as low as a dollar a month, or it can be per project, but I prefer per month) to people who do creative things in return for awesome stuff. Awesome stuff in the context of writers might be access to behind the scenes content like character profiles and location sketches, first looks at new material, Q&A chats over email or Skype, personal blogs, even free books. It's basically a new way to support creatives that isn't simply "buy a thing". It's very interactive and it's all about building genuine relationships. So...

If you really liked an author's work and they had a Patreon account where you could pledge financial support, even tiny amounts of money (the aforementioned dollar a month would be an option), and as well as awesome stuff you also got their ebooks without having to pay any more than you're already pledging, would you go for that?

If they put out two novellas or novels per year and you were paying a dollar a month, that works out at the amount you'd pay for an ebook download anyway, plus there would be all the additional awesome stuff. I don't think it devalues their creative output and the experience, time, effort, talent and skill that goes into it, because it enables them to earn a living, just in a different (very experimental and under constant review) way from what we're used to.

They may also just release the books for free on multiple platforms anyway and have Patreon as an option for people who want to financially support their work in return for the awesome stuff, which no-one but Patreon supporters would ever get their hands on.

By 'they' I mean 'me', in case you hadn't realised that yet :aww:

As a person who reads things, I would 100% go for this because I a) like to financially support creative people whose work I enjoy so they can keep on making that work, b) love getting awesome stuff, and c) am not exactly in love with the "buy a thing" model of making money from creative endeavours for various reasons. I feel like the world has moved on, publishing has moved on, the internet has moved on, and people's priorities and perspectives are different now.

But that's me. I want to know what you think! I'd love to hear from other writers as well as readers.

 Bookdiva Pencil

On a not-entirely unrelated note, if you'd like to read some of my stuff - not quite novella/novel length, although that's on the way soon- you can find it in my Writing folder on DA and also on Tablo and Wattpad.

Introducing...4TheLoveOfNature

Introducing... is a series at CRPhotography that highlights the work of photographers who are new to DeviantArt.

This week we're getting to know 4TheLoveOfNature

:icon4theloveofnature:

Blazing Beauty by 4TheLoveOfNature

How long have you been taking photographs for?
I've been taking photographs since 2013. In April it'll be 4 years exactly.

Portland's Head Light by 4TheLoveOfNature

What's your favourite thing to photograph and why?
My favorite thing to take pictures of would have to be flowers or anything nature related (hence 4TheLoveOfNature was born).

Newlyweds by 4TheLoveOfNature

If you could photograph anything or anyone in the world, what or who would it be and why?
If I could photograph anything in the world it would have to be the ancient temples in the Himalayas near the break of dawn or dusk. The building always struck a mysterious vibe with me and I love the way they're shaped.

Icicles in the Morning by 4TheLoveOfNature

What do you love most about DA?
My favorite thing about dA would have to be the communities. So many different kinds of artists can gather and communicate with people that like the same things, and the amount of friendly people is endless.

Adventurer by 4TheLoveOfNature

What's your favourite photo you've taken so far and why?
My favorite photo I've taken would have to be Pure Lily. I am just really proud of the way it turned out because I was rushing when I took the photo and when I looked through my camera card later that week I was really surprised. Another reason I probably like it the most is because lilies are my favorite kind of flower.

Introducing...EmMelody

Fri Apr 28, 2017, 1:00 AM
Introducing... is a series at CRPhotography that highlights the work of photographers who are new to DeviantArt.

This week we're getting to know EmMelody

:iconemmelody:

Southampton Water by EmMelody

How long have you been taking photographs for?
I have been taking photos since I got my first camera when I was quite young. However, within the past year (and since I joined DeviantArt), I have been focusing on improving my photography more than ever before!

Miniature Mountain by EmMelody

What's your favourite thing to photograph and why?
I love taking photos of just about anything that captures my attention, but I particularly enjoy photographing the natural world, whether that is landscapes or the wildlife that lives within them. I have always had a passion for animals, and I love walking through different places and admiring the beauty. Photography allows me to capture and remember the amazing experiences I have, and the incredible things I see!

Time Travel by EmMelody

If you could photograph anything or anyone in the world, what or who would it be and why?
I would love to travel and visit different landscapes and places, especially vast mountainous regions. Where I live we mostly have trees and beach scenery, so I think visiting and photographing something different would be quite an experience!

Also, here in the UK we have quite timid but beautiful birds called Kingfishers - I have seen one multiple times recently flying beside a river near where I live, but I have never been able to get a good picture of one. That is my goal this year!

Follow Me! by EmMelody

What do you love most about DA?
The positivity on here is my favourite thing about DeviantArt. Everyone is so inspiring and willing to support what you do and help you progress. It's an amazing community and I am so proud to be a part of it!

Evening Falls Upon Us by EmMelody

What's your favourite photo you've taken so far and why?
That's a tricky one! I would say my current favourite photo I've taken is "Last Leaf of Autumn".
The reason why this photo is my favourite is because I had never seen light like this before, and it only lasted for about 5 minutes. It was such a gloomy day and I wasn't really expecting to get any nice photos, then the sun shone through the clouds and illuminated the fog in this forest I was walking through. It was so beautiful just being there and I am so lucky I had my camera to capture it!

Introducing...EyeOfTheKat

Tue Mar 28, 2017, 1:00 AM
Introducing... is a series at CRPhotography that highlights the work of photographers who are new to DeviantArt.

This week we're getting to know EyeOfTheKat

:iconeyeofthekat:

Fallen Angel (updated) by EyeOfTheKat

How long have you been taking photographs for?
I joinded dA in April 2016 and started with photography just a bare four weeks earlier in the first week of March 2016. So you can basically follow my whole progress as a photographer right from the beginning here on dA. I even have one picture from the very first week still in my gallery.

A Million Stars by EyeOfTheKat

What's your favourite thing to photograph and why?
I love all and everything about nature to photograph! Mostly I have a tendency to shoot naturescapes of all sorts and close-up/macro. Nature just amazes me and brings every time I go out some new feeling of awe for me. And that is what I am trying to capture in my pictures, to bring this feeling of awe about natures beauty to you through my art.

As I am still a bloody beginner (a year is nothing in my eyes) I also experiment a lot with all different kinds of photography. But nature is what I will always come back to. I am not very good at creating pictures yet (like in conceptual photography) but I think I have an eye to see the incredible little moments that are around me. And piece by piece I think I am getting better at catching them on camera as well.

Touch by EyeOfTheKat

If you could photograph anything or anyone in the world, what or who would it be and why?
That is a tough question. Actually I do not know. I have a lot of goals where I want to travel in the future and what I would love to see with my own eyes, but there is not the "one" special place or thing. For me it is all about the perfect moment, when everything is just "right". A stunning landscape, a dramatic sky and incredible light. I think for me it is mainly always about the light. Without the right lighting even the most amazing places can not give you this feeling I am always looking for.

The Feast by EyeOfTheKat

What do you love most about DA?
I came to dA because a lot of my friends are artists in some way and they have been on dA for many years. So as I started with photography I remembered that they told me this is a great community and that is why I decided to join as well.

And I was not disappointed - the community here is just amazing. I met so many wonderful people in my short time here. Everybody is so nice and tries to help you to grow with your art. I think that is something you can not find anywhere else.

Deception by EyeOfTheKat

What's your favourite photo you've taken so far and why?
This picture shows a very special moment in time for me. And it is also very beautiful and of a good technical quality. It is taken in the National Park Wadden Sea at the North Sea, Germany. I was going through a very dark and painful time then. My boyfriend and I spent a few days there on a short holiday. The weather was mostly crappy (which is expected there so I should not complain), lots of rain and clouded skies. One late afternoon we decided to drive out to the outskirts of the Wadden Sea to have a small walk at the end of the day - even when the weather was quite bad as we started.

It was ebb, so the water was a few kilometers away from us. We walked a bit on the edge and then a few hundred meters out into the Wadden Sea. It was still raining, changing from only a few drops to a constant light rain back and forth all the time. Mostly I kept my camera in my backpack as I was afraid to damage it as it is not weather resistant.

And then suddenly it happend. The clouds broke up and there was these incredible light all around us, illuminating the clouds and the puddles of water on the ground, making these stunning patterns and reflections. I think I lost myself in this moment for a time as this sight just filled my heart with joy and happiness. And my painful times where forgotten for this moment out there. And I kept a bit of this feeling always with me since then.

Luckily I was also able to capture a bit of this incredible moment on camera as well. Maybe you can get a bit of this feeling as well from it.

I'm on Snapchat now, because reasons

Mon Mar 13, 2017, 1:24 PM
snapcodeMarch2017 by TanyaSimoneSimpson

Every time I read about how ridiculous/self-indulgent/disgusting selfie culture (whatever the fuck that even means) is and how terrible/offensive/pretentious it is for people to share pictures of the minutiae of their lives on the internet, I think, “Hang on, I’m ridiculous, self-indulgent, disgusting, terrible, offensive and pretentious! Why am I not doing more of that stuff?”.

So I downloaded Snapchat. My Story is set to public (so far). My “who can contact me” thingy is set to Friends, even though I haven’t added any yet. I don’t entirely know how to. I’m a bit weirded out about the idea that if I add someone as a friend they can call me. Like with voices. It seems like that’s a thing. Citation needed. I have another browser tab open with a Google search for “snapchat how to”. I made the little picture up there with my face in the ghost thing so that’s good. Look, I’m 36 years old, shut up.

If you follow me (or add me or whatever you do on Snapchat) you will be exposed to an interactive ephemeral visual art experience. Or you’ll see lots of photos of random crap I encounter as I go about my day. However you want to look at it. To be honest, it’ll probably just be a series of hideous mistakes captioned with “What the fuck am I even doing here?” for about a week.

As far as I know, you can follow/add/whatever me by taking a picture of the thing with the ghost and the dots and then doing something in the app. I think you can also search for me. My username is tanyassimpson (cause I’m super witty). From what I’ve read on some embarrassingly “teaching your dad to type” style articles that were exactly at the level I required, adding someone as a friend is a one way thing, then they can choose to add you as a friend if they want. So if you seem to be an alright human being or if we obviously know each other, I’ll probably do that.

This will be an interesting experiment. Or something. See you there!

 Tanya

Shoot People, Win Stuff, Join Us

Wed Mar 8, 2017, 4:20 AM
After a month's break from contest-hosting, CRPhotography's monthly contests are back and March's theme is MY FAVOURITE THING. Yep, it's all about People & Portraits photography and you're invited to point your camera at interesting humans to be in with a chance of winning 1,200 Points or a 3 month Core Membership.

The contest is open to members of CRPhotography but luckily anyone can join the group. Come and hang out. Share your photos. Join in our contests and projects. Be awesome with us. We'd love to meet you!

All the details about how to enter the contest are in the journal below...

While I'm on the subject of CRPhotography, we're also seeking new admins to join our team.  We need help with requesting artwork to the group's gallery, running projects, promoting the group and our activities, general housekeeping and helping me with the monthly newsletter.

You don't have to be a Community Volunteer or a Senior Member to help out at the group and you don't have to have been on DA for a bazillion years either. We're looking for people who are passionate about photography, in love with DA and itching to get more involved with our community.

Info about how to apply to be a CRPhotography admin can be found here...

Finally, if you have a free moment over the next couple of days and would like to do something that will make me love you forever (I actually will, I'm very appreciative that way), it would be amazing if you could share the link to the Monthly Contest: People and Portraits journal in a poll, status update or journal. More promotion of the contest means more people getting their cameras out and making lovely art, and we're all about the cameras and the lovely art.

:iconcommunityrelations: Welcome!

This month the general photography CVs - Mrs-Durden, overdebated and myself - set a total of 24 DDs across nearly every gallery we cover! Many thanks to everyone who's suggested to us, and as always we need more suggestions so don't be shy. Our guidelines are linked at the bottom of this article, and we tend to get a lot more People and Portraits suggestions than anything else so bonus points if you send us great pieces from the "weird" galleries. Self-suggestions are always welcome if you have a piece of your own that you think we should see!

Introducing...ov3

Mon Feb 27, 2017, 10:52 AM
Introducing... is a series at CRPhotography that highlights the work of photographers who are new to DeviantArt.

This week we're getting to know ov3

How long have you been taking photographs for?
I bought my first DSLR for christmas 2011. A sudden wish. It was a Nikon D3100, with the 18-55 lens from the kit. A good camera for a start. It's easy to use and quickly gives some results. 2012 was a learning year for me. I didn't know a lot about photography. I read a lot, I tried with many failures, I did some experiments. That's something I still do now. I now have a Nikon D7200 with several lenses.

Messier 42 by ov3

What's your favourite thing to photograph and why?
I wouldn't say I have a favorite theme to photograph. I like to take pictures. It can be nature, birds, architecture, street, when I'm on a walk or still life when I'm stuck at home. I like to photograph some events like races, timber sport or people performing art. I also do some astrophotography with a very good friend of mine. We're just average amateurs, but what fun!

I had the chance to do my very first portraits with friends this year. This is something that I like a lot, as much for the photos as for the complicity that is created between the model and the photographer. The next step is macro photography. I want to try it and I'm currently looking for a lens.

I really don't want to fix any limit in my photography. So much the worse if I'm not the best in a category...I have fun and that's what matters.

cat003 by ov3

If you could photograph anything or anyone in the world, what or who would it be and why?
I would like to fly in a shuttle to photograph our earth from outer space. Just a dream, of course.

MC030 by ov3

What do you love most about DA?
When I joined DA, I didn't really know where I was going. The first days and weeks were quite quiet. Then came the first DA friends, the firsts comments. It's really great to get some feedback on my work. Groups are also a nice way to learn and improve. I would like to thank in particular PhotographyGuide for all the help they bring me. The other thing I really love at DA is the opening on other art than photography. I learnt to like abstract art here. It's the same for drawings and paints. I really can't draw anything but I'm big fan of some drawing and paint artists.

bird022 by ov3

What's your favourite photo you've taken so far and why?
A picture of Audrey we did some months ago. Severals reasons about this choice. It was our first photoshoot, I really like the black and white in this photo and she's surely my best friend.
